Backgammon – Three General Plans

In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You want to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can manage, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious calamity since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, because you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
