Backgammon – Three Main Techniques

In very simple terms, there are three general techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to switch strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
