In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You must be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time trouble considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
