Backgammon – Three General Schemes

In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main strategies employed. You must be able to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
