Backgammon – 3 General Plans

by Caden on April 18th, 2017

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main techniques used. You need to be able to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time dire straits considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
