Backgammon – Three Main Strategies

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You need to be able to switch techniques instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
