Backgammon – Three Basic Techniques
by Caden on March 5th, 2019
In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 main game plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious difficulty because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
