Backgammon – Three Basic Schemes

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three fundamental game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, because you do not have other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
