Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious dire straits since they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
