Backgammon – 3 Main Techniques
by Caden on May 8th, 2021
In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 basic strategies used. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
