Backgammon – Three General Schemes

In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
