In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic techniques employed. You must be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
