Backgammon – 3 General Plans

by Caden on August 19th, 2023

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time dire straits taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
