Backgammon – 3 General Strategies

In very simple terms, there are three fundamental tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious calamity since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
