Backgammon – 3 General Techniques
by Caden on October 26th, 2023
In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious calamity because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
