Backgammon – Three Basic Techniques
by Caden on December 1st, 2023
In exceptionally general terms, there are three main tactics employed. You need to be able to hop between tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
