Backgammon – Three Basic Plans
by Caden on March 6th, 2024
In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
