Backgammon – 3 Basic Schemes
by Caden on March 18th, 2024
In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 basic plans employed. You must be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious trouble because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
