Backgammon – Three Main Plans

In very general terms, there are three general plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is then in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, because you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
