Backgammon – 3 Basic Strategies
by Caden on June 21st, 2024
In very general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You want to be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This involves closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
