Backgammon – 3 Main Schemes

by Caden on December 19th, 2024

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 chief tactics employed. You want to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
