The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part Two
by Caden on March 17th, 2025
As we dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of skill and luck. The goal is to move your pieces carefully around the game board to your inner board and at the same time your opposing player moves their chips toward their home board in the opposing direction. With competing player chips shifting in opposite directions there is going to be conflict and the need for particular strategies at particular times. Here are the two final Backgammon strategies to round out your game.
The Priming Game Strategy
If the goal of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to move his chips, the Priming Game tactic is to completely block any movement of the opponent by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s chips will either get hit, or end up in a damaged position if he/she at all tries to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anywhere between point two and point eleven in your half of the board. Once you have successfully constructed the prime to block the activity of the competitor, the opponent does not even get to roll the dice, and you move your pieces and toss the dice yet again. You will win the game for sure.
The Back Game Technique
The objectives of the Back Game technique and the Blocking Game tactic are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions in hope to improve your chances of winning, however the Back Game technique utilizes alternate tactics to do that. The Back Game tactic is often used when you’re far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this tactic, you have to hold 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This plan is more complex than others to employ in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your chips and how the chips are relocated is partially the result of the dice roll.
