Backgammon – 3 Main Plans
by Caden on March 30th, 2025
In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques employed. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty since they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
