In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief strategies used. You need to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time difficulty because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
