Backgammon – Three Basic Schemes

In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious difficulty seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
