Backgammon – 3 General Plans

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits since they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
